Background Checks are Changing
Fingerprint background checks are getting easier for the Missouri Highway patrol and other agencies.
The process is simple but getting results can take weeks.
Several employers require its employees to have a background check.
Tabitha Rice, who`s applying for a position as a bus driver here in St. Joseph, had her fingerprints taken for the first time Tuesday. Her employer requires background checks for prospective employees before the hiring process can move forward. Ms. Rice thinks its a good move, "I actually think it should be done because you don`t know what kind of people are out there."
The current process takes less than 15 minutes, but getting results takes 6 to 8 weeks.
Governor Matt Blunt`s new plan to improve the way background checks are conducted, will speed things up.
Sheldon Lyon with the Missouri Highway Patrol says, "There`s a new system placed in Missouri. Missouri now has a vendor that will fingerprint people that have requirements to be fingerprinted for certain occupations. They`re going to set up locations around the state where people can go to be fingerprinted there. Instead of it taking several weeks for the fingerprints to be processed by a card these fingerprints will be taken electronically through a live scan and they will be processed in a few days. So it`s a much quicker system."
Instead of using the card, fingerprint images will be captured electronically instead of manually.
Mr. Lyon says reducing the processing time of fingerprint-based background checks will be a tremendous benefit to Troop H and other agencies that require this.
"This takes away from our manpower where we could be doing something else but instead we are in here fingerprinting. The patrol likes it because some the pressure we see here will be alleviated through the private vendor who will be doing the fingerprints much more quickly." Lyon also says the new system will now take about 5 business days to get results.
The new system begins Wednesday, July 20th. There`s an additional cost to this process. To find a location near you log onto www.identix.com/iis
